How long does an oven clean take?

The short answer
How long does a professional oven clean take? An hour and a half to two and a half hours for a single oven. A double takes longer, and a four door AGA is most of a day. What moves that number is the appliance itself, not how dirty it has got.
What makes one cooker longer than another
All of it is countable before anyone turns up, which is why a time can be given with the price rather than discovered on the morning. None of it is about how the oven looks inside.
How many cavities
One box to strip or two. It is the biggest single thing on the list, and it is why a double is a longer visit than a single rather than the same visit with more wiping.
Whether the door splits
Where a door comes apart, the panes come out and both facing surfaces get done, then it goes back square. That is work a door that does not split never adds.
How many racks and trays
Racks, runners, the grill pan and the trays all come out and go into a soak. Four shelves and two trays is more to handle, rinse and dry than two shelves and nothing.
A grill in its own compartment
A separate grill box is a second cavity with its own door and its own glass, which is why it counts as a double here even when the oven below it is a single.
A hob or an extractor on the same visit
Both are quicker alongside an oven than on their own, because the visit is already happening, and both add to the time we are in the kitchen.
A neglected oven takes us longer and costs you no more
Plenty of people ask how long it takes because they are worried about the state of theirs. It makes no difference to what you pay. The appliance sets the price and roughly the time, and the state of it changes only our end of the day.
Carbon that has been baking on since the oven was new wants longer soaking and longer working at, not different chemicals and not a bigger bill. Where something genuinely will not come back, a pitted base or crazed glass, we say so before we start rather than afterwards. What the state of an oven does not do is move the number you were quoted. The whole price list is on one page and it is the same list in every village we cover.
Against doing it yourself, which is most of a Saturday
A tub from the supermarket costs a few pounds and most of a Saturday, and it gets the front half. Gloves on, windows open, kneeling at the cavity with the shelves in the sink, and the afternoon goes. What that day reaches is the walls, the base and the two faces of the door you can reach, which is a real result and it is the one people are proud of.
What it never reaches is the same four things every time: the inside faces of the door glass, because the door has to come apart first, the fan housing behind the cover, the seal channel round the cavity, and the undersides of the racks and the runners they sit on. Those are where the smell and the smoke come from, so an oven that had a long Saturday spent on it still smokes on Sunday.
So the honest comparison is not a few hours against a few hours. It is most of a Saturday and the front half, against an hour and a half to two and a half hours of somebody else’s time and all of it.

Very little of it. Somebody has to let us in, and after that you can get on with your day. We need power, water, enough room to work in front of the appliance and somewhere clear to lay the door down, and we work around whoever is in. Most people put the kettle on and then forget we are there.
Two things are worth saying when you book rather than on the morning. If parking near the house is awkward, tell us. And if it is an empty property between tenants, check the power and the water are still on, because a visit to a house with neither is a wasted trip for both of us.
The oven is yours again as soon as we leave. Everything is wiped down and dried before we go, so you can cook in it that evening, and a bulb that has blown while we were in there gets replaced at no charge. What comes apart on the day is set out on the oven cleaning page.
A longer job is our problem, not a bigger bill
The quote is fixed in writing before we set off, so the number you are told is the number you pay whatever the day turns into. There is no hourly rate to run over, no call out fee and no VAT to add on the end. The only thing that ever changes a quote is an appliance that was not mentioned when you asked, and that is a different job rather than a longer one.
It matters more than it sounds, because a fixed price is what lets us take the time an oven actually needs. We would rather stay longer than leave the fan cover half done to get out of the door, and with the price already agreed there is nothing pulling the other way. Questions about how long it takes
Does a really dirty oven take you longer?
Yes, and it costs you the same. Years of carbon means more soaking time and more passes, which is our problem rather than yours, because the appliance sets the price rather than the state of it. Leaving it another year does not put the number up.
How long does a double oven take next to a single?
Longer, because there is more of everything. Two cavities, two doors, two sets of door glass to take apart and put back, and usually more racks and trays to soak. A grill in its own compartment counts as a double for the same reason, even where the oven under it is a single.
Does having the hob and the extractor done add much to the visit?
It adds to it, and it is still one visit rather than three. The hob and the hood are done while the racks and trays are soaking, so booking them together is the shorter way round as well as the cheaper one. A hob alongside an oven is £15 and a hood is £20.
Will you tell me how long mine will take before the day?
Yes. You get the likely time along with the price when you ask, so you know what you are giving up the kitchen for before anyone is booked in. Tell us the make and whether it is a single, a double, a range or an AGA and both numbers come back together.
Is it quicker if I take the racks out before you arrive?
There is no need. The racks, the runners, the grill pan and the trays come out and go into a soak as part of the job, and they are in the price rather than added to it. Clearing the worktop nearest the oven helps, and that is the whole of it.
