That is the price alongside an oven clean, which is how almost everyone books it: the visit is already happening, so the microwave costs £20 rather than £30. On its own the £65 minimum applies to any visit without an oven in it.

Most of the mess in a microwave is on the roof rather than the floor, because everything that splashes lands up there and bakes on. The waveguide cover, the small mica panel on the wall, absorbs splashes and cannot be scrubbed hard: if it is scorched or arcing it needs replacing, and we will say so rather than clean round it.

Is a microwave worth paying to have cleaned?
At £20 alongside an oven it is the cheapest thing in the kitchen to put right, and it is the one appliance where the smell comes from a part you cannot see: the waveguide cover on the inside wall. Almost everyone has it done while we are already there, which is why it is £20 rather than £30.
What is the waveguide cover?
The small panel, usually mica, on the inside wall or roof. It protects the part that generates the microwaves, it absorbs splashes, and when it burns or arcs it needs replacing rather than cleaning. Most people have never noticed it is there.
Do you clean combination microwaves?
Yes, and they take longer than a solo one because they grill and bake as well, so there is baked carbon in there rather than just splashes. The price is the same either way.
Will the smell go?
Usually, because the smell is burnt food on the roof, the turntable ring and the waveguide cover rather than in the air. If the cover itself is scorched the smell can come back when it heats up, and then it is a replacement part, not a cleaning job.
Do you clean built in microwaves?
Yes, and it stays where it is. The turntable and its ring come out, the cavity, the roof and the waveguide cover are done in place, and the price is the same as for one that sits on the worktop.
How do I stop the microwave getting this bad again?
Cover food while it heats and wipe splashes while they are still fresh. A splash that gets heated again every day bakes onto the roof and the waveguide cover, and that is the part that starts to smell and, left long enough, to scorch.
